sunny in philly Sunny Days in Philly

When I returned from the states earlier this week, I wasn’t empty handed. On our way home we stopped by a Target and I grabbed a few DVD’s to hold me over until next TV season starts in the Fall. One of the little gems I found was the first two seasons of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia – and if you’ve never seenĀ  it I suggest watching at least 1 episode. Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a cringe worthy buddy sitcom that follows four friends as they navigate through life as bar owners in Philly. The catch is that all of them – not just one or two, but all of them have absolutely no respect for anyone but themselves. The show insults everything from the handicapped to the molested children, but all within a tone that leaves you feeling sorry for them, and not anyone else because of their lack of knowledge beyond themselves.

I’ve heard this series as being compared to something like Seinfeld where there really isn’t a point beyond the characters. In that sense I agree – the show is about how ridiculous these characters are. But there is a point of discovery with each episode that makes for great entertainment. One of the mechanisms they use is the ridiculous ideas they come up with to try and make money. Throughout the show you’ll find them doing everything from underground street fighting to underage drinking, all attached with some of the most uncomfortable, cringe-worthy scenes you’ll ever see.

If you’ve got a weekend to burn and about 20 bucks, I suggest grabbing this series. It’s worth the watch for sure.
