Wild Things
So with a title like that I bet you think I’m going to make a Denise Richards reference right? WRONG!
Where The Wild Things Are finally has a trailer! Spike Jonze has been a favorite of mine since Sabotage. His progression through the ranks of directing is inspiring and his work oozes with the kind of detail I really enjoy. My personal favorite of his is Adaptation and if you know how much I hate Nick Cage then you’ll understand how difficult it is for me to enjoy anything with his name on it – good thing for Cage, Spike made the flick great.
So onto Spike’s latest – Where The Wild Things Are. Who didn’t read this growing up? I mean unless you came over to North America in the later stages of adolescence there really isn’t any excuse. The Maurice Sendak children’s classic lives in almost every 1st grade classroom and probably the majority of bookshelves containing fiction for toddlers. In case you are one of the few who didn’t have the luxury of reading this growing up, there’s a summary here (Okay, that’s a cheap toot of the old horn, but I’d rather not have to go online and find someone else’s review).
The new trailer looks amazing and Spike’s history with music videos really helps him with things like trailers especially when he puts it together with Wake Up by Arcade Fire. I’ve been following the production of this flick for a while now and I know that there has been some troubles, but now that we can finally see the resemblances of a full feature, this looks absolutely amazing. With very little CG and some huge advancements with puppets and suits, Spike seems to have done what a lot of directors haven’t when it comes to bringing our youths back into our lives – he’s taken the source material and created what our imaginations had been doing for years.
Where The Wild Things Are is a great piece of fiction to begin with and I think Spike has the talent to not only adapt the story to the screen, but also create something brand new for later generations to enjoy. Sorry to put the early pressure on you here Spike, but your track record speaks for itself.
